The Oxford Poetry Group


The Oxford Poetry Group group was formed in 2010 and meets once a month to read and discuss poetry.

The first part of the evening is given to the work of a poet chosen in advance and briefly introduced by the host. Poets featured to date include Louis MacNeice, Rainer Maria Rilke, Elizabeth Bishop, Derek Walcott, Philip Larkin, Emily Dickinson, Thomas Hardy, Douglas Dunn, Ted Hughes, David Harsent, W. B. Yeats, Edward Thomas, Robert Frost, John Burnside, Simon Armitage, Charles Pratt, John Clare, T.S. Eliot, C. Day Lewis, Tomas Transtromer, Derek Mahon, James Fenton, David Morley, Carol Ann Duffy, Seamus Heaney, Clare Trevien, and Osip Mandelstam.

Wider topics have included Shakespeare’s sonnets, the poetry of the First World War, and Myth.
